Yee Peng, which is one of the two biggest lantern events come from the old Thai traditional Lanna calendar. Local people usually spend three days celebrating the event and they will release the lanterns into the sky at night to take away the misfortunes. While Loy Krathong is for releasing the lanterns into the water and takes place in every city in Thailand, Yee Peng is actually a smaller part of Loy Krathong Celebrations, when people release the lanterns to the sky.
Although many other towns and cities in northern Thailand celebrate Yee Peng, Chiang Mai is the best spot to truly experience this exciting cultural event.

One of the best spots to see thousands of sky lanterns and water lanterns is on the Nawarat Bridge. This is where you are officially allowed to release the lanterns into the sky from 7 PM till midnight on the second and the third night of the festival.
Tips to enjoy the best sky lantern view at Nawarat Bridge or near Nawarat Bridge
- You are not allowed to release the lantern right on the bridge but near the bridge. Head to the Wat Buppharam, a temple near Nawarat Bridge where you can freely release lanterns and admire the beautiful night sky in a serene atmosphere.
- The Nawarat Bridge is across the Ping River, you should visit the north and south side of the river where there will be more locals celebrating. More interestingly, on the third night of the Yee Peng festival, there will be a parade, fireworks and standing on the other bridges across the Ping river is also perfect to catch the view.
